It works for emergency.
Product works as it should . Wish it were able to produce more light . Bright enough to see things up close but after a few feet it leaves one wanting more light

Awesomely Bright
I took this camping & it was almost bright enough to light up our whole campsite. Very helpful. I didn’t use the crank function, and the charging didn’t work for my phone. However, I didn’t read the instructions & might have been doing something wrong. But I can definitely recommend it for the brightness & solar charging. It charged well & worked every night.

Perfect for Emergencies or Camping
I've got several battery-powered lanterns, but they all have the same problem: batteries that never seem to last as long as the power outage. Plus the cost of the large, heavy lantern batteries has increased greatly and they are getting more difficult to find. This lantern avoids that problem of expensive, short-lived batteries with a couple of options to keep the lights on until your power comes back on or your camping trip is over. The lantern itself is attractive with a carrying handle and fold-away hook for hanging in a tent or overhead. The solar cell at the top of the unit is firmly attached and the handle for cranking the dynamo folds away into the base's side. I would advise caution when cranking as a too-energetic person could get carried away and over-do it; only a few quick turns are needed to power up the unit. The crank handle is plastic and could accidentally be broken off if not tucked back into its "docking station" when not in use for charging. The storage battery in the base gives the lantern enough weight so it won't be tipped over easily. The LED lights are controlled with a push button on-off switch on the top of the base. The lights have three lighting levels, illuminating the center four LEDs on each face of the center post on low, eight on each face on medium, and all 12 on each face when on high. Unlike the older lanterns that used incandescent bulbs, the LED bulbs stay cool, which can be an important feature when used in hot weather or around children who might bump into the lantern. The light emitted by the LEDs is bright white. The unit I received also had a housing at the bottom of the base for three AAA batteries for another method to power the lantern, though why anyone would opt for this when the solar and crank options are there is a mystery. No mention of using it with AAA batteries is made on the skimpy instruction sheet. My only complaint about the lantern, in fact, is the lack of clear instructions. There is one page of product information included with the lantern, but it is not very informative. There is a large photograph of the lantern with the major features pointed out, but the smaller photos are unclear with no detail or captions with explanations. The sheet points out the "USB Charging Socket" but does not specify whether it is used to charge the unit, as through a computer or adapter, or if it can be used to charge devices with USB cables. Upon seeing it, a neighbor immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was for charging the lantern via a computer. Based on the product description on Amazon, it is for charging devices after you have powered the lantern with the solar or dynamo option. Another user making the same mistake and plugging it into a computer could do some harm to either the lantern or the USB connector. Another disconnect between the information on the sheet and on the Amazon product description is the estimated life of the LEDs themselves. The online description claims 100,000 hours yet the instruction sheet claims "more than 10,000 hours." While taking this literally, 100,000 is more than 10,000 it is still a major discrepancy for the estimate. Highly recommended in spite of the poor instructions. If the manufacturer could do one thing to improve its product, it would be to re-do the instruction sheet with clearer photographs and more precise instructions and product information.

Great
It’s super bright and lasts a while! Thinking about buying a few more.

Nice bright light. Four Stars!
Nice bright light! What a great product, easy to use, works well, and light weight too. The LEDs are crisp and bright; almost too bright, especially on its highest setting. The light emitted is not a "warm" light it is a "cold" bluish light, that it not a bad thing really, it's just not cozy light. The lantern has a number of power options available to it. Firstly, you can load it with batteries and run the lantern off of them. Secondly, it has a dynamo, which seems to work quite well. it seems that just a few minutes of cranking will get you several hours of light. Next there is a solar panel on top. When I first unboxed the lantern, I placed it on the porch for several hours in semi direct sun. the little charge indicator LED near the bottom edge glowed brightly indicating that it was charging. Later that evening I turned it on low, sat it in the bathroom and went to bed. I was pleasantly surprised that it was still on when I woke up the next morning. I have not tried this on the medium or high setting so i can not say how it will perform on those settings. But for me if it burns for 6-8 hours on low with just a few hours in the sun, i consider that a win. Lastly there appears to be a DC input on the opposite side of the USP port. I do not know if it runs on this or not as the lantern did not come with an adapter or plug. The unit can also charge USB devices as well...well sort of anyway. I plugged my Galaxy S4 into it when it was showing about 32% charge. After about 4 hours it had only pushed it to about 39%, not very impressive at all. However, I did plug in a depleted emergency/backup USB charger and it charged it up to full after about 6 hours. So I guess it depends on the device how well it will charge. But for me putting about 10% back in to my phone is plenty in an emergency to be able to make a call or send a message, especially if you consider the source...a $20 lantern. I am satisfied. The reason for the 4 star rating was build quality. The lantern itself seems okay, however, the solar cell and the top shroud that it is attached to is very loosely fit. I know this because my dog swatted it with her tail and it popped off when it fell over. It literally fell on its side and the top fell off. Granted it snapped right back into place, but it is still a poor fit. I ended up making a slight modification to it and now it is much better. Bottom line. Great product for what it is and the price makes it a good value. I will likely purchase more and would recommend it to friends and family.YMMV

Good....Could Easily be Great
I bought this with primarily the idea of having a lantern around the house that would be reliable in emergencies and power outages, without having to worry about batteries and plugging the thing in to charge. In that respect, this lamp is great, gives not a huge amount of light but enough to work around the house a bit, (would not want to have to read or whatever too much with it) and the two different charging methods ensure it will always have some power. It has two small LED indicators, one which shows green when you crank, and the other which when exposed to light glows increasingly red as the intensity of the light increases. These I presume are showing charge. I store the lamp in front of a south facing window, get a red glow through most of the day, so the lamp appears to be keeping itself charged. I have not tested too much how long it lasts, but we used it as a back light to watch a movie on TV for a couple of hours at least with no dimming so that is a good start. Will test it further as I get a chance. So far so good. Why it only got a three? OK rating...well the thing is kind of neat, well built for the better part but a few minor things would have easily made it much better. Firstly...needs a better instruction sheet with it, explaining what the USB port is for exactly, what the little plug in between the two LED indicators on the base is for, and what exactly those indicators are for would have been nice. Instead of having to guess at all that or spend time figuring it out. Secondly....there is a little trap door in the bottom designed to hold batteries...right...LOL...once you open it be prepared to throw it out, or duct tape it back, the flimsy little tabs broke off the first time I opened it. If I had a use for it, and was going to use batteries it would have gone back. Hopefully I will not need them. Thirdly....the handle on top is well made with a hook to hang the thing, however someone decided to build it so you can remove it for some reason....and as a result it wants to slip out of the tabs holding it and come off the lamp all the time. Would have been better just fasted firmly to the top of the lamp, it folds down and I can not, for the life of me see why anyone would need to take it off. Good product, couple of minor issues that would have made it great.

Great Lamp!
We camp almost every weekend in the summer and we have been looking for a durable and practical lantern that can travel with us and fit our needs. We could not be happier with our purchase of the Whetstone 36 LED Solar and Dynamo Powered Camping Lantern. This lantern has multiple functions and practical uses for any family or person who enjoys the outdoors. We have taken this lantern on several hiking and fishing trips and its solar powered and crank powered LED light has saved us on several occasions. The collapsible crank is convenient for packing and also incredibly useful in situations in which you do not have access to batteries or solar powered energy. The solar power provided by the lantern is outstanding lasting up to 6 hours of use (long into the night). Also, cranking allots for approximately 20 minutes of light for every 1 minute of cranking should you ever run out of solar powered light. We would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a durable lantern or light for their outdoor adventures and needs. Price wise compared to most other lanterns this is an absolute steal. Lanterns at the store range from around $20-$100 and almost none of them have as many features/options as this. This is something I have not been able to find in stores so i am very happy with this purchase.

This lantern is a ok, there are better options out there
* Original thoughts shortly after buying: While this lantern comes from a less known brand, it seems to hold up well in real use. I picked this lantern for a few reasons, the handle, the metal guards around the lens, the huge solar panel, and the crank. No need to worry about it running out of power, even if you are hiding in a cave, thanks to the hand crank. The overall build quality is okay, I wouldn't want to drop it on a hard surface, since the shell is a lighter plastic material, but it's no worse than anything else in this price range, given the features. * Edited: The built in battery that charges off the solar panel died after about a year, rendering the panel useless. Still works with 3 AAA batteries, but that wasn't the point of getting this, since the solar panel will not charge batteries in the AAA compartment. Pros: - Low weight, compared to other battery powered lanterns I've used, such as older ones that needed to be loaded with 4 or more D cell batteries. - Very bright LED's, I've only ever needed to use the the lowest setting, but I'm sure the higher settings would be great for setting up a tent in the dark for example. - The solar panel is very sensitive, it even received a charge while stored in my tent! Note that tinted windows will block solar rays and prevent charging. Cons: - After about a year, and only a few camping trips the built in battery died. Still works with 3 AAA batteries, but the solar panel is now useless since it only works with the internal battery. - The handle could be attached more firmly, one side of mine pops out from time to time, but it's easy to put back on (it's not broken) - The light is not very well defused, which means that while you get very intense light, it's also harsh

Very bright and long lasting battery!
Works great and gives a substantial amount of light on full power (and lots on the lower settings also). To give an idea of the light output, we used it one evening in our 12x12 screen tent to play a board game, and although the light was a little dim, it still gave plenty to see the board by (it was hung in the center of the screen tent). Two lanterns like this would have provided nearly indoor lighting conditions! I haven't tested how long the battery will last under full load, but it lasted a few hours on a full charge and brightest setting, with lots left over. It also feels fairly well constructed given the price range. Should give lots of operational hours if you take care of it. I will report back if I run into any issues.

Works great...
Very pleased with this lantern...seems very durable and the 3 brightness settings are simple and throw off a lot of light, even at the lowest level. Lantern came charged (huge bonus) and ready for use, but was in a plain box with no instructions...just a one page sheet with a diagram and same info as on the ad description. It has a USB port, but I'm not sure if that's for charging the lantern or to enable you to charge other devices. I tried to charge my iPhone and that was a no go...although I've heard iPhones are very finicky. Looks like it also has an ac port but no mention of that anywhere. It has an amber, red and green led light...the green light comes on when cranking. I'm assuming the amber and red light will come on when the lantern's juice begins to be drained. Searched the web for manufacturer instructions, but couldn't even find the manufacturer's website. Overall a great basic tough lantern that throws off a lot of light without needing batteries (I'll never use them, but it can be used with 3 AAA batteries).
