Cooks exactly as described
I absolutely love this steamer. Food tastes so good and so fresh. If you cook fish in it I would suggest using a coat of cooking spray on the tray. It would be nice if there was an easier way to add water while cooking. That little drawer makes it kind of tough. I wind up spilling most of the water. Over all this is the best small appliance I’ve purchased in a very long time.

Enjoying
Bought this to steam rice and thereby freeing up my pressure cooker to make meals (used pressure cooker for rice ... I don't like stove top rice ... then would use the pressure cooker again for our main meal, e.g. Curry ... which meant letting it cool a bit then cleaning between cooking the two). It's easy to use and have had no issues with it. Water does condense out of the steamer while it's running and leaves water on the counter underneath it ... which has generally been my experience with steamers like this one. I just put the streamer on a dish towel while cooking and that has seemed to address the problem. I like being able to steam vegetables and rice at the same time ... added bonus for me. It's a little too big for me and my wife as we only need to cook for two. This steamer will cook enough rice for 6+ people. I wanted a smaller unit, but as the smaller units were about the same price I opted for this one. I work at home and my wife commutes ... so I make meals. With this steamer and my pressure cooker, I can get a gourmet meal prepped, cooked, and on the table in about 25 minutes. It's been a very positive experience ... spending less time cooking (= more time with my wife) and eating healthier.

It works. Good build quality, some significant design errors
Overall, I like it, and it's built well, but it does have some problems. The design adds features that actually make it less usable. I bought this to replace an old Rival steamer that was simpler and much better designed. On the plus side, it heats up quickly, and having two tiers is convenient. Those are two areas where it is better than the old Rival. On the negative side... The control logic is poor. Yes, it has a timer and a computer. But that doesn't provide any value, except to slow down use of the product. You have to press buttons once it's plugged in to start it. The "warm" and "delay" features don't make any sense and aren't safe. You shouldn't leave food sitting around waiting to cook in this thing, and why would you, as it heats up to steam in about 3 minutes. Likewise, you can't safely leave cooked food in it without the steam running. To do that makes it an incubator, not a cooker. Next problem is also a bit safety related, in that the water container for the steam has inaccessible areas for the water level display that are impossible to mechanically clean. You can only rinse that out, indirectly, by repeatedly filling the bottom unit and emptying it. If you live in a mold prone area, this is going to be a problem. Water level sensing either shouldn't be done, or it should be done without hidden areas for water to flow into. Next problem is that the food trays are difficult to clean because of all of the crevices and sharp corners. For vegetables that don't leave much if any residue, this is fine. If you have a dishwasher, it's fine. But I wouldn't suggest purchasing this for meat or fish use unless you have a dishwasher. Simple flat trays with holes and little bumps would have been so much better. And easier to make. Just because you can build goofy things in cad doesn't mean you should. Finally, the water container and the overall size is a bit small. All that said, now that the Rival isn't made anymore, this is the best option for a countertop steamer that I've found. It's marginally better than using a stainless or bamboo steamer over a pot, because it's marginally more convenient and it saves a burner.

leaking after 4 months of use, waiting for response from hamilton beach co.
i had up until a few months ago, an older version of this steamer from 2013.. i loved it.. it worked great for nearly a decade until i accidentally allowed the cord to get close to a hot stove burner (when i unplugged the steamer) i was not confident in using it anymore, fearful that it had burned in too close to the wires so i tossed it and ordered a new one in august this year. it worked great up until this last week when i was steaming some cod, i came over to check on everything and there was water everywhere. i cleaned everything up (the fish cooked all the way thru) and dried the appliance off, but water was still leaking hard out of the bottom and the sides where the base and metal meet. i let it sit for this last week and today decided to test it and filled it to less than the max line and within a minute it was gushing again, i hadn't even plugged it in yet. i sent an email to hamilton beach, they have a limited guarantee on this item for 1 year, amazon has a 90 day policy (im just shy of 120 days) so im waiting for a response back from the manufacturer. im hoping it won't cost the equivalent for shipping a replacement as it would be to just buy a new one on amazon. im giving it 3 stars bcs cleaning it is easy, its versatile, and really easy to use. if it weren't for the leaking i would give it 5. i really like the HB steamers, they have been great for steaming veggies and fish but i may look for another brand, depending on what i hear back.

Careful with lightweight, brittle clear plastic
This steamer was received today delivered by USPS and, surprisingly, the carrier left it at our front porch and not by the mailbox or the street as is usually done and which is about one and a half city blocks from our front door. I just unboxed the steamer to give it its first wash only to find that the parts where the food is placed are made out of brittle cheap-looking clear plastic. If any of the pieces falls to the floor it’ll probably shatter. There’s no heft to the plastic used. I am trying to think what I could compare it to, it’s like a child’s toy. Be careful when you first unbox it, do it on a safe surface where there won’t be any chance of any of the pieces falling to the floor. I’ll report again after I’ve had a chance to use this steamer. The 'stars' I gave this review don't apply because it has not been used.

Very effective steamer, wonderful health-conscious option !!
This unit replaces an aging competitor model that is no longer available. This unit is slightly smaller, not enough to make a difference for us (2 people). It works quickly and perfectly, cleans a little easier than its’ predecessor, as the steaming racks come apart (the former appliance did not). Want healthy, steamed food, with unbelievable fresh and full taste? Don’t hesitate to try this kitchen tool !!

DANGEROUS DO NOT BUY ONE
This item is not intended for use in the UK! It is rated at120Volts and not the 230/40Volts we us in the UK. Comes with a two pin American (moulded) plug. If you were to remove this to put a three pin plug on you invalidate your warranty and would be dangerous!!!!
