Your first thought is to use the small end, but that only leads to a mangled filter screen. Turn the tool upside down where the large end goes into the Aerator and align the notches (yes, there are notches on the inside of the large end) as best as possible then turn until they lock in. Depending on how long the Aerator has been there, you may need to attach a pair of channel lock pliers on the tool to turn. I have to give the tool props that it is quite sturdy and you won't break it. At this point the Aerator should easily come out; if it is stuck in the large end, use a screwdriver up from the small end to pop it out. These are all lessons learned as there are not any directions. Good product and gets the job done - once you figure it out.

For the Moen Asceri model this tool is essential. I tried to remove the hidden aerators using house tools. After an hour of trying to replace four aerators in my house I gave up and started searching for this tool One side has the 4 slots to fit into the metal aerator sleeve for removal and installation. The side in this photograph also fits into the metal sleeve for the aerator but I found the other side to work much easier.

Moen Aerator tool
I've two types of Moen faucets in use, ones with vandal proof aerators and some without. This tool does not fit either on. Waste of money for me.

Disappointing result
I needed a tool to remove the filter with a nearly 2 inch head. When searched with model type, this tool was offered first. It not come close to meeting my need.
