Beautiful & Safely Constructed Child Toy Chest

Beautiful & well constructed toy chest with child safety in mind (e.g. lid panel includes anti-slam hinges, front panel top edge is machined to allow easy opening without pinchpoint, & air vent hole added to inside back panel). It was very easy to assemble & I received my order within only 2 days. Thereforefore I rated 4 out of 5 score. The only suggestion to make it a too score of 5; I would have preferred the inside bottom panel to be made with wood at same thickness as other wooden panels instead of the thin board used at bottom because it would not surprise me if some children got inside toy chest which could break bottom panel even though child is not supposed to get inside chest. Kids will do childish things sometimes. Other than that, I loved the toy chest.

What a life saver!

And when I say life saver, I mean it! My daughter would take her toy organizer bins and just dump them on the floor the moment my head was turned. It was always a mess and she was always falling and getting hurt so I knew I needed to upgrade! In comes the Melissa & Doug real wood toy chest. My biggest fear was pinched fingers and now that I have it all assembled and have been using it for over a week I can say with assurance, you do not have to worry about those sweet little bitty baby fingers being smashed. The safety hinges in the back are amazing! There is absolutely no way to pinch baby fingers in there! You also do not have to worry about the lid coming down and smashing their fingers either because the hinges in back will hold the lid upright whether there is a human or anything else there to support it. The lid only comes down when pushed down with intent. You do not have to push hard, it's a very gentle close. I was really happy to see this was real wood and even has the smell of brand new, real wood! Like walking through the lumber yard at your nearest Lowe's. Assembly was very easy. The only part I found a little challenging was getting the hinges mounted to the toy chest and lid because this is the last step of your assembly the chest has to be tilted just so, that way everything lines up and doesn't over extend the hinges. I honestly think in retrospect, attachment of the lid would have been much easier to do if I had but the back brace/bar on before the lid getting attached. That bar will help you to keep the lid in the correct position to install the hinges! Bottom line: This is a very good sized toy chest sure to fit mostly every toy of even the most spoiled child. I recommend this for every age from toddler on up to about age 8 or even an adult would like this to hold blankets or anything you would like to keep tucked away for easy access and provide additional bench-style seating.

Great design, quality, and safety

The design is top notch. From the extra bar on top, the side handles and the soft open and close lid. The instructions are the best I have ever seen. Part a, next part b, then past c. Use hardware 1, then hardware 2 etc. So intuitive that I’m surprised this level of instruction is not the default. The best I have ever seen. Can’t say how much I appreciated the thoughtfulness.

Sturdy and East to Assemble

I’m not the craftiest person out there but this made me feel more than capable. Also, it’s sturdy enough for me (ME!! 260 lbs man) to sit on. 10/10

Great toy chest…

This chest is made of quality materials (even tho you have to assemble it yourself). The assembly directions are clear and easy to follow. It appears that this toy chest will last a long time and will serve our grand-children well.

Beautiful, but too much Styrofoam Packaging

I bought this for our daughter's toy box and it was really easy to put together! It seems spacious and sturdy, I can't wait to paint and it fill it with toys. My one concern, is I urge the company to look at sustainable packaging options. I filled an entire black garbage bag with styrofoam packaging, just from this one order. I'd urge them to look at recyclable options, perhaps molded/shaped cardboard or wrapping the pieces in soft cardboard fibers instead of styrofoam sheets.

Excellent quality toy box that blends well with the furniture in the family room

This toy box is well made and easy to install for the most part. The hinges were a little difficult to deal with but worked out fine.

The family loves this toy chest

We love this toy chest. It is the perfect size. Quite large and fits a ton of toys, but not to big to take up a lot of room in our apartment. It looks very nice and functions quite well. The hinges used are quality and they allow for very easy operation. The lid stays open in any position and never comes crashing down because the hinges hold it in place. This is a important feature because the first thing my 9 month old baby did was walk up to it, open and close the lid multiple times while taking several breaks to stick his head in the toy chest and see what is in there. This toy chest is very safe so I have no worry of it hurting my curious little baby. It is also the perfect height so our 9 month old can stand up and hold onto it, operate the lid himself, and reach a few toys that are closer to the top. The wood is a good compromise between durable hardwood and lower cost particle board. I am sure it could support children who want to sit on it and maybe a light weight adult, but it is really not designed to be used as a bench. Before this toy chest came toys were everywhere. Pilling up in corners and hard to clean up at the end of the day. We needed a toy chest so onto amazon I went. I have a few other of Melissa and Doug's products and they are all made very well and our baby has loved them. I was happy to see that they make a toy chest so I have something to contain all the toys they sold me. I think this toy chest is a good price point and uses durable enough materials to last a long time. It is also nice that it comes in different colors so that you can match your decor. Building this toy chest was very easy, anyone could do it. It only used one tool and took about 20 minutes or less. After I built it I noticed that the lid did not align well and it would crash into the side of the toy chest when I closed it. So I loosened the screws, realigned the lid and then fastened the screws. Problem was solved. It also mentions in the instructions to wait until it is full assembled before you fully fasten all the screws. I found that it was important to have the chest on level ground when fastening all the screws and not have two legs on and two legs off the carpet like I did at first. I would recommend this to anyone who has a baby or child with a lot of toys. It is really nice to have a place to put all the toys at the end of the day and also control how many toys are out in the play area at one time. I look forward to using the toy chest as a teaching tool to help my son learn how to tidy up after himself. Great bang for your buck

Love the slow/ forced closed lid so my littles fingers are less likely to be caught. easy to assemble, very sturdy can be used as dual bench/ toy chest. Fits nursery really well! Worth every penny!!
