Toddler Loves This Puzzle
I had bought this to put up for my toddlers third birthday, but he found it and was ready to play at two and a half. The pieces are perfectly sized for little hands to hold on to and big enough that I don't have to worry about them being a choking hazard. We have played with this puzzle every evening and it has helped him with learning the alphabet.

I love it, but...
My daughter just makes such a mess with taking the letters out and just leaving them everywhere! Honestly, I love it. It’s great to have for one on one time and it helps her visualize and learn the alphabet. She loves Blues Clues so she it made playing with this a lot easier. They’re pretty solid wooden letters at a perfect size. Nothing to complain about on my (or my daughters) end!

Well-made, uppercase alphabet puzzle
This is a well-made puzzle, with a sturdy wooden base board, and chunky alphabet letter pieces that are easy for small fingers to handle. The basic puzzle design seems quite plain – a striped base board, featuring a large picture of Blue in the bottom right-hand corner, with 26 colourful letter pieces decorated in a range of rainbow colours and featuring a pattern of swirls, dots, and paw prints. Underneath each letter, when it is lifted from the tray, is an image of something that starts with that letter – several of which are themed to Blues Clues characters. The pictures don’t have captions next to them (a pity), and instead a paper list of what each represents is included with the puzzle. It’s a good quality jigsaw. However, from an early learning perspective some things about this could be improved. The puzzle is in all upper case letters, but children are taught letter recognition and the beginning of reading and writing using lower case characters (usually with the exception of the letters starting names). There are also a couple of letters where the choice of image to represent the letter has the correct character alphabetically, but the sound it makes isn’t related to letter-sound based learning (‘I’ is represented by ‘ice cream’, but in letter-sound learning is taught as ‘i’ as in ‘ink’, and ‘X’ by ‘xylophone’). Plus ca change, plus c’est le meme chose – the alphabet jigsaw my grandma bought for me in the 1980s also had uppercase letters and ‘I’ represented by ‘ice cream’ and ‘X’ by ‘xylophone’. My Mum, who taught phonics even then, used this to teach me that sometimes letters don’t ‘say their sounds’, but the words are nevertheless written with those letters.

Not designed for UK market
This large 30 x 38 cm chunky wooden inset puzzle has some great reviews from the USA but we were disappointed with its suitability for the UK market. The puzzle pieces are large and chunky, the pictures underneath are colourful, and a list of the objects shown for each letter is printed on the back of the puzzle. But we have these reservations having used it with our 2 and 4 year old grandchildren - my wife is a retired early years teacher: First problem is the use of upper case letters, when children in the UK start nursery/school they are taught to recognise and name lower case letters first. Second the letters are chunky and are meant to stand up - but C D F G J and P roll over. Third some of the pictures chosen to illustrate initial letter sounds are misleading for UK vocabulary and pronunciation - Mailbox, Pail (bucket) are Americanisms. T is for Ticketty Tock but shows a clock. We say Zip not Zipper. Icecream does not begin with the phonetic i (ih) sound. You need to be familiar with Melissa and Doug characters to know that B is for Blue (though the colour is fine of course) J is for Josh. They show R for Refrigerator but most young children here say Fridge. F is a picture of two cartoon figures and is supposed to suggest Friends - Frog would be simpler! Fourth we are not sure what Blue's Clues refers to in the blurb? Overall it is well made chunky puzzle but could be confusing for young children in the UK. We recommend it should be used with adult support.
