Batteries not included!
Like the title for this review reads, batteries not included. I had one of these years ago and it went with me every where I went from being in a go bag, camping supplies, to training war games in the military. I didn't need to hang lights in the A-Frame to personal pup tents we used back then. If there was N&L discipline, this little lantern would hide in my overstuffed Alice-framed ruck sack until it was safe to come out. Played many a board game with this style UCO lantern, not to mention hammock camping and using as a "romantic" dinner at candle side. The candle provided with the purchase of the lantern doesn't quite cut it with how long the burn time is compared to a natural beeswax candle by hours! I'd recommend adding a 3-12 count pack of beeswax candles for unprecedented burn time and the sweet pleasant musk that occurs when burning. I believe the supplied candle offers a 6-hour burn whereas the beeswax candle burns at 12 hours putting off a soft, sugary smell.

Awesome cable lantern!
As per the standard, UCO has been putting out quality outdoor equipment for some time now. This lantern is no different. Being collapsible protects the glass and saves space. Disassembly is simple and cleaning is a breeze. Candle soot wipes right off. Unfortunately, the candles designed for this lantern are pretty expensive. Nothing a couple videos can't solve, youll be making your own! The candle definitely is much brighter than without the lantern, as well as burns much more even and protected from the elements. As always, another great product I would highly recommend to any outdoor enthusiasts!

Works great on a flat surface, hanging chain gets super hot!
So you cannot actually safely suspend this lantern from anything. The heat vents from the top which heats the chain, which heats the hook. During a recent power outage I discovered this fact when I tried to hand my lantern from a ceiling hook. I smelled an odd smell, realized that the paint on the Ceiling hook was cooking and then burned my hand taking the lantern down. All I can say is that I am really glad I was not hanging this off a tent rope, small tree branch or other flammable object. I would have probably been badly hurt or killed instead of just singing skin off my hand. You can't put this lantern on a shelf or under an overhang either as the top really does get insanely hot. That said, the lantern works fine sitting on a table or other flat item with a goodly space above it. It is pretty bright and the wind guard works great.

efficient and practical
Even though I gave this 5 stars, I do have to say that this DID break on me (totally my fault). I live in a van, took a turn too fast and it went flying out of a cabinet onto the floor (along with other things) and the glass shattered even though it was closed. I like the lantern so much I ordered replacement glass for it. I like being able to hang it or have it on the counter or taking it outside. It give such a nice ambiance. I used it all the time, and when the replacement glass comes in, ill continue to use it.

Oil lamp insert
Nice little compact lamp. UCO discontinued the oil lamp insert. I used a 1oz amber bottle with a wick, lamp oil, and reversed wick stem. It fits well with the spring assembly in place. The metal cap can remain on when closing the unit so it can travel and be stored with the oil lamp insert in place. The larger plastic cap would not allow for enough clearance to close it. I used an old 1oz beard oil bottle filled with lamp oil, reversed metal wick stem from a tea light candle and a cotton string for the wick. The bees wax candles are great, but are $$. I can run this set up at camp for hours and hours for nearly nothing.

Used to have charm over the years, now it’s just a commodity product.
I have had UCO lanterns over the years until the spring had sprung or I had lost them while overnight hiking. They have always been a good source of light. Recently, I re-supplied myself with both a brass version , which was the original when it first came out in 1971, and the much lighter aluminum version. Still the same product, so far. My only issue is: why would they want to ruin it with a cheap, oval decal sticker, instead of the enamel paint they would use for the product name logo? One of the original lanterns even had, beside the UCO logo in black enamel, radiating flames around the name-also in black enamel. That was a beauty. These cheap paper stickers cheapen the product name, believe me. I understand cutting costs, but this diminishes the product image to something now that is just churned out in China as a commodity. Too bad. It used to have charm and an Identity. Corporate marketing has blown it. Now I have peeled the lopsided sticker off each of my new lanterns with my fingernail. Looks much better, but I still prefer the nice painted on logo they used to have. At least if people ask me if it is a UCO, I can point to the bottom of the lantern, which says UCO, right above made in China.

This candle lantern is amazing
This candle lantern popped up as a social media ad and it was definitely a product I wished for but never knew existed. I use it all the time. My favorite spot is using it at night reading in my home office. I love the soft glow of the light. I recently bought a second one for my camper and plan on buying more as gifts for friends. In the past I have bought matches from this company. They make great high quality products!

Good worth the money
Not used it yet, well in the house when I first got it, mostly for ambient light when camping and fishing, the only thing the wax runs inside it, after one candle not really problem soak it in warm water to soften scrape it out.

Safe to use and gives off ambient heat
Ended up gifting this to an elderly relative as if knocked over the flame will go out . Ordered another tho. Only gripe is that it is a struggle to open and paint on sliders does wear off . The metal top does get very hot duh stupidly i tried to close minutes after a test burn n ouch , apart from my stupidity a great ambient light for a tent cant wait to test it out and see how it performs on a coastle camp

Handle with care
Im quite pleased with this candle but you really have to handle it with care as it looks like it can be easily damaged as the build quality is not the best

Manage your expectations
Before purchasing this item, you need to manage your expectations. It is not going to be a primary source of light or heat. On the other hand it is a very useful backup system that I use to provide some lighting in an emergency and as others have suggested, pleasant mood lighting. Another useful application, is with the appropriate wind screen and top I have used it to heat up a small cup of coffee. Granted you need to be careful that it will be a top heavy and prone to toppling over....but with a little patience it will work. Overall a great piece of kit to have in your camping and emergency kit.

What I should have bought first time.
It’s not cheap but does what it says It takes the edge off the winter cold in my Bivvy, nice ambient light.
