In cryptic International Iconography, it kind of tells you how to release a bit. I will tell you.
TLDR: Pull down on the black section just below the chrome section to release your bits. It is the section that is same diameter as the top. A TINY gray on black stealth arrow is there. See my photo. I want to give it a one star for easy to use as other will have my same problem. Once you understand how to release the bits, it is decent. It may have had all 5 stars but for the instructions. I wanted a quick-release bit holder that would hold tight to my bits and not stay with the project/screw head, ect. I spent hours researching the best bit holder. Yes, I am that kind of guy. This one got great reviews. Putting the bit in was easy. Releasing it was not. It held on even with a vice and plyers. Pulling, twisting, swearing, jerking it back and forth, all no. There are NO instructions on how to release the bits. Not even online. I looked at the tiny packaging and it has that cryptic international set of icons of a lock and unlocked lock. DEWALT marketing put DEWALT TM yellow behind the whole bit holder and that yellow circles out to encompass the unlock icon, making it seem as if you pull or push down on the whole bit holder to release it. No. The back of the package has 3pt type, worthy of a medicine bottle, full of CYA 'wear safety goggles', where it is made, all in three different languages, NOTHING about releasing your bit. (Insert swearing here.) Setting up an Amazon return, I am frustrated that online people are saying to remove a wire locking ring that DEWALT put in it BEFORE using it (different holder). I am frustrated that I have lost a bit and time sending it back to the seller. I spend more online research looking for a different holder. One video shows a different holder with a pull down release ring. WHAT? I hate giving up, and this thing has my bit! With a magnifying glass, I realize that the black section, just below and the size of the chrome upper section, has a 5/16" tiny gray (on black) down arrow only on ONE SIDE. I pull down and it barely moves. I pull more and it finally gives me back my bit. As I must like punishment, I put the bit back in and keep working the black section to where it gives me back my bit with less cussing. To DEWALT management: Free User Experience advice from a UX designer. Once people know about this feature, it becomes second nature. Simple and easy to use. FIRST, they have to know it is there or you get furious users who think your product sucks. I get it, this is a $10 gadget, so making a video or giving your cardboard a one inch bigger strip to explain how to use it seems foolish. "Everybody (here) knows how to use one!" To new users, you are building flawed tools and giving them hours of frustration, plus getting returns and negative word-of-mouth advertising. STOP the 'cool' gray printing on black. In low light, or without a magnifier, we just cannot see it!

It's okay
I'll admit, I had doubts about this tool's ability to retain a fastener and they proved somewhat accurate. It does a good job retaining bits by magnetism and a locking mech that could work a little more smoothly. I wish it was a little shorter for access to tighter spaces but that really depends on the situation. The "short" story on this is you have to use really short bits so the fastener is relatively close to the tool's magnet or it isn't retained. Its ability to retain a longer fastener in the bit, like a 3 1/2" screw, is dubious at best. It would also be nice if the outer sheath rotated freely so it could be used to steady the aim with your free hand while the fastener is being driven but that might not be possible due to its mechanical locking feature. Its limitations are just that, limitations, when a few design improvements would broaden its usefulness and applicability. For true, solid magnetic retention of fasteners it's best to use the sliding magnetic collar design. DeWalt's metal magnetic collar seems to be the most solid and durable of these since other manufacture's offerings are cheap plastic with questionable durability. These collars require special "necked down" bits to work so setting up for all the different drives these days (SQ1&2, T25, T30, PH2 &3) gets kind of pricey. I'd hoped this would be a more economical alternative to that, and it is when using shorter screws in a situation its length allows.

Not the short bit holder you wanted.
I hope this helps someone because no one seemed to show photos. Even though it's just a half inch it's the difference at how well I can drive screws more accurately I'm trying to find this Milwaukee to buy again because it's the shortest I've seen. The DeWalt has to be out of the drill farther for the quick release to work. That's why the photos might look biased but there not. I wish they represented how far the holder with bit comes out to. Hope this helps at least one person.

Best bit holder to date.
The release mechanism on the bottom instead of the top where the bit is, definitely last longer and I have noticed it's less prone to getting in the way. If you know what I mean thumbs up ;) Thank again DeWalt.

Easy to use but will need multiple
I like the design and easy to use switch ability with the but holder but my only gripe is the durability. For regular use with an impact nothing seems out of normal but when you use it to drive long screws for a while the little latch at the base of the bit holder breaks off and now you can’t swap bits so your stuck with whatever bit you got on but it still works and magnetized so I’m not too mad. Just gotta get a couple depending on what you do

Why Did I Not Know This Existed?
For years I've been grabbing the bit as it falls out after removing or inserting the screw and placing it back in the magnetic holder for the next screw. For YEARS. I have always hated magnetic holders, but they're better than nothing, right? No longer. This thing is awesome. It grabs the bit and will not let go until you slide the collar down. So, two options: 1, leave a little room between the collar and the chuck so that you can slide the collar down and switch out bits. 2: Remove the entire assembly from the chuck, and then swap out bits. Either works fine. I like to leave a little room so I can swap bits on the fly. It means you have to tighten the chuck as tight as you can, but think about it this way. You never had to remove the assembly once it's in place (unless you need to put in a drill bit), so tighten away. I only wish I had a chuck with a key so I could get it good and tight. Great product.

Fine tool from dewalt
Well built

Buen portapuntas aunque algo estorboso

Recomendo.
The media could not be loaded.

Best ever
Literally the best bit holder I've ever used. Expensive but good. I bought another spare for me and one for my daughter
