Frustratingly close to awesome
I like this watch a lot, and think Armitron has done some things very well. The case is very nice. This is how you do a retro case; not resin - steel. It feels great. The buttons are also great; check the buttons on this watch vs some actual vintage watches of this era. If you look at this watch vs. a vintage Armitron, these look much more substantial. Even compared to a vintage Seiko, which were very nice at the time, these buttons look better. Design wise, you can see the inspiration. They were shooting for the first generations of this type of watch. How did they do? When this type of watch came on the market, the alarm was real novelty. To make sure the world knew your watch could beep, someone get the idea of making a "speaker panel" with slots cut in it, usually just above the crystal. Every manufacturer seemed to follow suit. I didn't know it at the time, but as near as I can tell, these were purely decorative. You can see in these pictures the vintage Seiko has horizontal 'speaker vents'; the vintage Armitron has vertical ones, but they made an effort to make them appear functional. The vintage Criterion just has a sort of sticker depicting a vertical grill, but it is a separate panel on the watch face, separated and above the crystal. This watch pays homage in an unusual (and to me disappointing) way by using horizontal stripes to evoke the grill, but everything is under the watch crystal. It would have been nice to have it split off and make the speaker panel have some tactile slots. The band to me is a weak spot. It isn't really period correct and damn is it uncomfortable if you have any hair on your arms. Doesn't look terrible, but I can't wait to swap t out. The display is nice and crisp. My 50+ year old eyes really would have preferred larger numbers, but this is period correct for the era. Functionally, there's not a ton to it, it has a watch and stopwatch, calendar with year. Alarm and hourly chime if you want it. No count down timer. The light is period correct and laughably useless. Overall i think Armitron has done a good job.

Fantastic watch!
I have long wanted to have such a watch with a stainless steel case, but all models on the market were offered in plastic! And finally, good luck! I bought it without hesitation and did not regret it - the watch is cool! Real retro style and high quality workmanship! I'm satisfied! Highly recommend!

Vintage funkiness
This rocks some serious old-school vibes. Full metal case! It's great, buy it! You won't regret it.

Full stainless steel retro digital watch, but it's a hair-nipper.
I didn't quite believe that this would be a full stainless steel retro watch, given what Casio charges for their chrome-plated resin watches. It's the real deal. This particular variant (the 40/8487) has a more retro-70's look to it, but boy is the bracelet a hair-nipper. I'm not talking an occasional tug like what you get with the Casio A158 or even A159W. I'm talking Timex M79 level arm hair removal. It's pretty uncomfortable for the time is takes it to give your wrist a Brazilian. The 40/8474 version of this watch looks like it uses a more conventional bracelet, so I will be giving that a try next. I may swap the bracelet if I like this watch head better. Functionally, It's pretty similar to your Casio A158/F91W (including the terrible backlight). The Armitron has a dual time feature and 50m of water resistance that the bottom-end Casios lack. Overall, Armitron really knocked it out of the park with these releases, especially at this price point. Well-done. Maybe it will motivate Casio to bring back the classic Marlin (though it will probably sell for over $100).

Nice looking watch retro watch with a real metal case.
The watch is truly all metal and nice looking retro watch but the backlight is a little balb on one side that does not light it up enough to see the time in the dark, if that doesn't bother you then it's a great deal but often I am in the dark and need to see the time. For the money getting a digital watch made with a metal case with a retro look and you don't need the backlight, I would not hesitate to buy it for the price. That was my only negative aspect about it but it might not be yours. As for the rest I did not even try it on or remove any plastic protection, I just immediately on arrival I took in a dark area and tried the backlight because that is important to me. I guess there trying to stay true to retro because back in the day that's how they really were but back then you don't miss what you never had. I wish they would put in a modern backlight then it would be perfect. I did return it which I really wish I didn't have to. One more thing also, it is a little hard to read for us older folks because the numbers are smaller than I anticipated, but for younger people, no problem at all I would suspect.

Nice but too small
Nice but too small of a display. Reduce the black area on the front and give a larger screen. I needed reading glasses for the date! :) otherwise OK.

Awesome retro watch!
This is possibly the best retro-style digital watch currently on the market in this price range. You have to beg on your knees for the other watch makers to release a steel body retro digital watch (most are chrome plated resin/plastic or brass), and when they do, the price is far higher than what this Armatron goes for. Armatron, on the other hand, offers us this all-steel watch, with better water resistance(30m vs 50m) than its competitors as well! The backlight is period-correct, and while weak and hardly impressive, it does its job when I wake up in the middle of the night and my eyes have adapted to darkness. The acryllic chrystal is also period-correct, and while it acumulates scratches faster than mineral or saphire, it is almost unbreakable, which adds to this watch’s utility as a sport-watch. Also, scratches in acryllic crystal is easy to polish out, and there is even products available for this. 5 out of 5

Another lovely Armitron.
This is my 2nd Armitron purchase, the earlier one being the retro led one that resembles but is I'm every way better than a Casio of similar style. I was delighted to open this one to find that, yet again, Armitron has built a retro style digital watch with fantastic quality and, having now owned this one for long enough to comment, excellent accuracy, straightforward functionality and at a price that is much lower than the typical Casio of the period reflected by this Armitron watch. True that, I own a late seventies Casio 83qs 41b, received as a 16th birthday present having cost my late mother over £30 back in the 70s. That Casio needed some restoration work recently and I had no option but to buy the various parts to restore it from a USA based specialist. The cost of these parts was £85, which I paid rather than let a piece with sentimental value end up in watch heaven. My point here is that, for anyone who fancies a late 70s/early 80s digital watch, those older Casios, Seikos and similar won't disappoint if you get a good one or can repair such things, but for the looks, the functionality and a much nicer build quality than the actual period watches, Armitron is, in my opinion, the way to go. The watch case, the back cover and that gorgeous and surprisingly extremely pleasing bracelet put Armitron in the same class as the Seikos and far dearer watches from back in the day, but are far superior to the cheaper brands. Absolute bargain, beautiful watches, I recommend that you give Armitron a chance. I love my two and may yet buy another. Thanks for reading this lengthy review, now buy the watch and enjoy it.????????

Looks like a woman's or child's watch on my 7" wrist.
Firstly, the positives: This watch is generally well made and the steel case is a welcome change from the resin one often sees around this price point (£40). The buttons feel firm and responsive but may require a bit more force than you are used to applying to Casio watches of this type for example. The finish to the case is good and I liked the graphics and text on the back of the case. Also, the strap appears to be well made, despite being folded metal, and the shiny outer surface is pretty well done. Now the negatives: Despite the reviewers' photos giving the impression (to me at least) that this watch is a good size for a man's wrist, I was shocked when I first saw this watch in its case as it is very small indeed. I should have paid more attention to the measurements in the specs as it is only 35mm wide and when on my 7" wrist the whole appearance was very feminine indeed. Definitely more suited to a woman's or child's wrist. I asked my partner if she would like the watch before I returned it but she wasn't keen. Also, the strap at its narrowest point where it meets the clasp is only 11mm wide which is pretty close to the size of the straps on my partner's dinky, women's, Citizen watches. If small watches are your thing then these points may not be an issue. The strap also pulled hairs but this was no big deal for me. Now onto the light. Well it really is atrocious and I could really only make out the left digits when I used it in a dark room. Even when trying my best to see other digits to the right I couldn't. If telling the time in the dark is important to you then forget this watch. Some have said that this is true to the performance of the original (I'm not sure about this), but if so, that's not a positive in my eyes and it really should have been remedied in the intervening years. Finally, the edges of the strap are very sharp indeed and had I kept this watch I would have softened them with some glass paper before wearing it any longer. My final verdict is that this watch is generally reasonable with a few issues and it could still be considered an okay buy depending on your expectations (e.g. retro look, very small, lousy light).

Better IMO than the equivalent Casio but also a big BUT!
Fancied a nice silver digital, and bored with the go to Casio’s, and so, after reading reviews ordered this metal (as opposed to Casio resin) Armitron (already got the retro LED Armitron) from America. First impressions favourable, though it is on the small side, but got a small wrist, but the big negative! Couldn’t set the watch accurately, setting the seconds to zero was nigh on impossible. I have a dead on accurate radio controlled watch (Casio) but every time I pressed button ‘c’ to sync the Armitron with the Casio, the seconds did not synchronise. Tried doing just before those Casio top of the minute, and just after, but try as I might, couldn’t get the two watches to accurately synchronise. Don’t know if it was the button not making the electrical connection properly, when pressed, and would be interested to know if other users have had the same difficulty. I know the watch would drift from the settings, as all electronic quartz watches (except radio controlled) do, but I at least want to set a watch accurately to start with. Regrettably having to return the watch. Ps. Never had this problem syncing other digital quartz watches with a reference or time signal!
